Beer in Angeles City

San Miguel image
By far the most commonly consumed bar brew by ex-pats in Angeles is San Miguel. Usually packaged in a brown "stubby" returnable bottle (320ml), has an alcohol content between 4 and 5% by volume, and is a Pilsen brew. Right behind the regular San Miguel is San Miguel Light (SML), served in a tall (longneck) clear bottle, and is actually as strong as, or stronger, than the regular brew, having a published alcohol content of 5%. I have never experienced a bar in Angeles that didn't serve these two brews.

The major competitor to San Miguel Brewing is Asia Brewery which features Beer na Beer as its flagship product. It is very similar to San Miguel, comes in a brown 320ml stubby, and is also a Pale Pilsen brew. The Asia Brewery light beer competitor is Lone Star Light, served in a clear longneck. Yes, Lone Star, with the "National Beer of Texas" logo on the authentic appearing Lone Star label. I don't know the history behind this weird marketing play, but I bet it is a story! These beers are found in probably fewer than 25% of the bars in the Angeles City "Entertainment" zone and are sometimes priced slighty (5 pesos) below their San Miguel counterparts.

Only a few bars have draft San Miguel. The demands of running a clean draft beer operation are just too much for most of the bars. There are also a few places that serve some of the European beers at significantly higher prices. San Miguel has several other beer offerings (Strong Ice, Super Dry,...), and there are sometimes a few American label brews, but they are minor players.

Not so common in the ex-pat bars, but a staple in the Filipino customer bars and drinking spots is the San Miguel strong (7% alcohol by volume) beer entry, Red Horse. Strong beer in a large (500ml, 1000ml) bottle at a cheap price. Wonder what the result of that might be?? Asia Brewery offers Colt 45 as its strong beer. An astonishing brand name considering the history of the Colt 45 firearm in the Philippines! It is equally as lethal as Red Horse. Approach with extreme caution. Both are best consumed extremely cold and while seated.

Canned beer is not found in bars, but can be purchased in supermarkets at considerably higher prices than the same beer in a returnable bottle.

As for prices, an ice cold San Miguel in a go-go type bar on lower Fields Avenue at night will set you back 85 Pesos, or approximately $1.75 US as of January, 2007. Happy Hour prices are typically 55-60 Pesos in this area, but may found in a 2 for 1 (buy one, take one) arrangement also. Out of the main zone on Perimeter Road, the clubs typically charge 50 Pesos a beer with some Happy Hour prices in the 25-40 Peso range.

Buying from a store or distributor for home consumption will save you a lot! A 24 bottle case of Beer na Beer, delivered to my home, is about 250 pesos, or a little more than $5 US.
